restaurant: 4th & swift

just now settling in at home after a lively night celebrating the birthday of a well-loved friend.  tonight's dinner place: 4th & swift.  named after its location (in the old fourth ward) and its owner/chef (jay swift who, by the way, was kind enough to visit our table), it focuses on local produce and seasonal menus.  i had the crispy confit pork shank and oven roasted heirloom summer squash.  sound good?  it was.  the pork was tender with crispy bits of goodness on the outside and edges.  the squash was fresh and minimally cooked which allowed the flavor of the squash to take center stage.  if you're going to devote your menu to seasonal ingredients from local farms - this is how you should do it.  4th & swift is worth at least a visit.

but i think the real highlight of the night was our conversation and collective love of food.  if you gather together 6 young women with various personalities, backgrounds, and "current situations," you're bound to have a good time.  although i love trying new restaurants, the restaurant experience is only as good as the company you keep.  the food can be stellar, but if you're sitting opposite a lackluster food partner, your food will reflect that.  food is meant to be passed around and sampled, discussed and enjoyed together.  this is how you savor food.  don't just season your food with salt... season it with engaging conversation and good company.

good night.
